Still, it is a real curiosity, written by a couple of guys David Levien and Brian Koppelman who appear to know something about the dark underbelly of card hustling for fun and profit.

Matt Damon stars as a reluctant law student who can't put aside his subterranean career of playing poker and blackjack for big money.

After he loses his post-grad nest egg to a weird Russian kingpin John Malkovich --and also loses his disgusted girlfriend Gretchen Mol in the process--Damon's character turns to an unreliable old buddy Edward Norton for a dangerous game of sharking wherever there happens to be a game underway: frat boys, cops, bad dudes, you name it.

Norton appears to be living out every young actor's fantasy of re-creating Robert De Niro's prototypical head case in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets, and while his performance is burdened by obvious quotation marks, his estimable talent still shines through.

Damon's charm and intelligence bring some oomph to the curiously flat proceedings, and while his hushed, soul-bearing scenes with Martin Landau as a law professor who takes a shine to the kid seem gratuitous, they're still nice to watch.

Behind all this is director John Dahl Red Rock West , who is not exactly at the top of his game here but who brings his distinctive toughness to the crime-noir tone.

Worm: You know what always cheers me up? Mike McDermott: No, what's that? Worm: Don't tease me. Mike McDermott: Let's play some cards.

Worm: Yes! We are in very good company with Ford and Fonda, two likable and most reliable veterans of the silver screen, and crucially it looks like they are having fun - and it's infectious.

Technically it's a very good production. The stunt work is high quality, well shot by the wily Western movie veteran Kennedy, while Alexander's musical compositions have the desired jolification.

Rounding off is a splendid and comforting support cast that sees Denver Pyle joining Buchanan and Wills for further Western genre reassurance.

View All Critic Reviews Oct 23, Brilliant film about the underworld of high stakes poker. Director's John Dahl's effective direction is what keeps you interested and the tone of the film that of a film noir, which adds so much to the film's atmosphere.

The cast are wonderful in their parts, and the plot is very engaging, thrilling from start to finish. Edward Norton and Matt Damon are terrific here, and they both have intense on-screen chemistry.

If you enjoy a thrilling story with effective direction and a great cast, this film is for you. Rounders reminded me of the Mars Callahan film Pool hall Junkies, but this was a much better acted film with a more developed plot.

Enjoyable if you're a fan of poker and to the common film goers looking for a terrific flick that is sure to electrify the viewer.

Well crafted from beginning to end, Rounders is a wild ride and even if it lacks in some areas, there's enough good elements at work on-screen that make the film overcome its flaws and with an effective pacing set by director John Dahl, this is a well executed hustler flick that is very cool to watch.

With a great script and wonderful acting, Rounders is a film that you won't soon forget. Thrilling from the first frame onwards, Dahl's film delivers, and is never dull and highly entertaining.

If you enjoy these types of films, definitely give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. Alex r Super Reviewer. Jul 27, Now everyone seems to have caught it and it has fallen into the realm of being overrated.

It wasn't bad but it isn't great. John B Super Reviewer. Jun 14, Really good. I hadn't even really heard of this film aside from the name once or twice, but just decided to watch it one day out of boredom, which ended up being a great decision.

Great cast, and storyline. Check this film out. Stephen S Super Reviewer. Nov 29, It may have its flaws, but "Rounders" is by far one of the most entertaining films I've ever had to sit through.

From the wonderful, genuine performances of its actors to the clever, snappy dialogue of its script, "Rounders" is well-made all around, and it's so perfectly paced that not once did I find myself checking the time.

The film has its problems, and I'm not a huge fan of the ending, but I greatly enjoyed myself while watching it. Stephen E Super Reviewer.

See all Audience reviews. Teddy KGB: Just like a young man coming in for a quickie I feel so unsatisfied. Joey Kinish: Happens to everyone, time to time everyone goes bust.

You'll be back in the game before you know it. Grama: I consolidated your outstanding debt. Worm: where did you get the scrach for that, youv been rolling fags in the village.
